The “To Do” List.

Illyana Rasputin is not happy. As a general rule.

At this point, Marvel Comics is no longer depicting Illyana Raspitin (codenamed Magik) in the uniform above. That’s the mid-80’s look, which is when the “New Mutants” was the original X-Men spin off book. A lot has changed in comics, and at Marvel since then, including Illyana’s appearance.

Illyana is a superhero, most often in relation to the X-Men. She first appeared in the comic book Giant-Size X-Men No. 1 (May 1975). Magik is the younger sister of the Russian X-Man Colossus, who you recently saw in the film “Deadpool” (he was the huge metal guy). She is a member of a fictional sub-species of humanity known as “mutants,” who are born with superhuman abilities. Her natural mutant power is the ability to teleport, but what she seriously brings to the table is being a complete bad @$& sorceress.

Thing is…despite being a superhero, she’s not very nice. That’s kind of why today’s art (more of a quick sketch) is her. I always liked her as a character, and enjoyed her limited series in the eighties…one of the first four issue limited series’ that I ever read. She has to work at doing the right thing, because her really serious powers are automatically, by their nature, pretty corrupting. She does her best, but blows it a whole lot too. Few superheroes really fumble the ball, and then have to make good on it. Being a B-list character makes that possible.

So what’s this about? Well, I’ve wanted to draw Magik in this fashion for a while, to be sure. But more importantly, I have a big “to do list,” full of things that I really don’t WANT to do. Hence…Magik, and her general aloof negativity spoke to me. Her thought balloon is pretty on point, except that I have actual things to do on the list, besides “go to brunch.”

I don’t even get to go to my usual brunch…I have to go to some Fancy Brunch. Still, at some point during the day I will get my stash of comics for the week…so it’s not all badness. Small portions of excellence, right?
